Cleopatra Lived Closer to the Moon Landing Than to the Pyramids

Cleopatra VII was born in 69 BC. The Apollo 11 Moon landing happened in 1969 AD — roughly 2,000 years after her death. But the Great Pyramid of Giza was completed around 2560 BC — about 2,500 years before she was born. Cleopatra lived closer to the Moon landing than to the construction of the pyramids.

The pyramids were already ancient

When Cleopatra ruled Egypt, the Great Pyramid was already older to her than she is to us. Tourists in her era would have gazed at a monument already two and a half millennia old — weathered, mysterious, and ancient beyond living memory, much as we see it today.

She is nearer to us than to the pharaohs of the Old Kingdom

Flip it around: the span from Cleopatra to a smartphone is shorter than the span from the pyramid builders to Cleopatra. "Ancient Egypt" covers an almost incomprehensible stretch of time — around 3,000 years from the first pharaohs to Cleopatra's death. The entire history of the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages and the modern era fits comfortably inside a similar span.

Why this matters

We tend to compress the past into a single blurry era called "long ago". But the past has depth. People in every age stood among ruins far older than themselves and wondered at them — just as we do. Cleopatra, the last active pharaoh of Egypt, was in her own way a modern person looking back at an ancient world.
